Marine Social Education Promotion Strategy and Marine Cultural Assets Investigation Research (Southern Taiwan)
Date:2022-12-06
Unit:Department of Science, Technology, Culture & Education

As Taiwan is entirely surrounded by the sea, there has long been a close connection between people’s daily life and culture and the ocean. In recent years, the government has been more active in marine development. Marine education starting from primary schools has been provided gradually with positive outcomes in return. More and more universities are also offering ocean-related courses. Besides, the institute related to marine culture (Institute of Oceanic Culture, National Taiwan Ocean University) has been established. Centers for teaching and research in humanities and social sciences have been set up to focus on marine issues (National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Sun Yat-Sen University, and the Center for Maritime History, Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, Academia Sinica). For marine social education, agencies including the Ministry of Education and the Ocean Affairs Council proactively develop and promote relevant plans. Since the scope of marine social education is rather broad and many marine monuments are included, descriptions of the included content must be given, and all the marine cultural assets and sites should be listed so that the government can develop and carry out policies accordingly. In this way, the implementation of the policies can correspond with marine social education, and greater benefits can be further obtained. However, it’s impossible for the promotion of marine social education to be done within a short time. Thorough planning is required, so short-term and mid- and long-term plans must be drawn up. As places for the promotion of these plans are needed, the 12 ocean service stations have become the major locations to develop activities and plans. In this era where well-developed networks and visual arts have played important roles, the best way to promote policies and bring about a better effect is through media. These stations are regarded as the starting points in the introductions and descriptions of the surroundings of these stations. More desired effects can be produced if people know the role of these ocean service stations, so filming introduction videos is necessary.
