Taiwan Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Fisheries — Minister Kuan Visits Patrol Crew Combating IUU Fishing on the High Seas
Date:2025-07-25
Unit:Department of Maritime Security

The Fleet Branch of the Coast Guard Administration (CGA), in collaboration with the Fisheries Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, has launched the “2025 Second Pacific High Seas Fisheries Patrol Mission.” The HSUN HU No.7 set sail on July 25 and is scheduled to return on September 8.
To mark the departure, Minister Kuan Bi-ling of the Ocean Affairs Council visited Kaohsiung Port to encourage the crew on July 25. She reminded all personnel that as the mission takes place during typhoon season, safety must remain the top priority throughout the voyage.
Minister Kuan stated that the patrol will focus on the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) and North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC) convention areas. The HSUN HU No.7 is listed as an inspection vessel under both WCPFC and NPFC, playing a vital role for combating Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. This marks the vessel’s 12th patrol mission and the 69th joint operation between the Coast Guard Administration and the Fisheries Agency—representing a crucial force in Taiwan’s fulfillment of its international fisheries conservation and management commitments.
Minister Kuan also acknowledged the dedication of Coast Guard Administration and Fisheries Agency personnel, who often serve on the frontlines and are unable to reunite with their families during important occasions due to the demands of their duties. As this voyage coincides with Father’s Day on August 8, the HSUN HU No.7 crew will miss celebrating the holiday with their loved ones. Minister Kuan expressed her heartfelt appreciation for their sacrifice and devotion, noting that their steadfast commitment to maritime patrols ensures the stability and security of Taiwan’s surrounding seas.
In her closing remarks, Minister Kuan encouraged the crew, emphasizing that high seas patrol missions not only embody Taiwan’s active participation in international maritime affairs but also demonstrate the government’s commitment and care for Taiwanese fishermen operating in distant waters. She urged all personnel to uphold the spirit of safeguarding Taiwan’s maritime sovereignty and protecting the safety and rights of fishermen, while continuing to contribute to global fisheries management efforts. Minister Kuan concluded by wishing the crew a successful mission and a safe return home.
